The Making of America, Columbia A Southern Capital
Arcadia Publishing – Charleston
ISBN – 0-7385-2411-5
From the beginning, Columbia was a planned capital. This well written arm-chair history includes memories of Margaret Sims who was born in 1915 and lived to be 89 years old. Her memories enhance the stories of the post Reconstruction traditions, educational institutions, and social activities. Subjects include the beginning of the town, the Civil War, the formation of State College (now USC), Governor Ben Tillman, Strom Thurmond, Fort Jackson, and the State Capitol Building. The illustrations are from a vast personal postcard collection and personal photographs owned by the author and Margaret Sims. The modern-day photos are by Burke Salsi.
